Miscellany [manuscript], ca. 1625.

Maxims taken from a large volume with the folio number added at the end of each extract. Many of the maxims are from the Fathers and the classics. On leaf 15, 58v-60, and on the four detached leaves, a later person has added, ca. 1630, passages from [George] Hakewill's An apologie (STC 12612), Sir Walter Raleigh's The history of the World, [André Favyn's] The theater of honour (STC 10717), and elsewhere. On leaf 20 is a poem beginning, "Ah wreched they that worship vanitie." Also includes 4 leaves in envelope at the end of volume.

On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items.
